Amazing Grace – a special thank you

Little Miss Adorable

As crappy as Little Miss Adorable’s start in life was, we remain grateful to (most of) the doctors and (most of) the nurses who helped us along the way. I cannot say enough about the nurses in the special care nursery (NICU). Sometimes it was just a calm and silent presence while we cuddled Little Miss Adorable, sometimes it was a look of concern and strict instructions not to lift my 2 ½ year old. Sometimes there were jokes and stories about their own kids. Spending three weeks together, day after day, we bonded.

For a while I would drop in to show off Little Miss Adorable as she grew – her smile filled the room and the nurses would stroke her blond hair. When baby brother, The Dunk, was born two years later, again we visited the nursery. Little Miss Adorable’s toddler charm reduced the nurses to tears as Little Miss Adorable waved, blew kisses, pointed, and repeatedly said ‘baby!’ at the rows of infants in plastic cots.

Little Miss Adorable’s middle name is Grace. We chose it not because we are especially religious (we are not), but because it can mean manifestation of a favour or goodwill. Synonyms include kindness, love, forgiveness, charity, and mercifulness.

Little Miss Adorable’s middle name was chosen when I was still pregnant with her – other than some vague worries and reduced fetal movement, there was nothing to indicate the challenges we would face in her life ahead. But we remain eternally grateful for the help received along the way.

She is beautiful! I love the synonyms for the name Grace and bet she posesses a lot of them.

Thank you! Even when she’s being ‘naughty’ (i.e. delibrately trying to be ‘bad’ – hitting, throwing things, etc..) she’s still good…
